England and Wales Drawn Together for RWC 2027 Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was overseen by sporting icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England together with their Welsh counterparts will face off in an identical pool for the World Cup in 2027, promising a major pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw recalls their memorable clash in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at Twickenham contributed to the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Key Group Draws

Ireland and Scotland also share a group together, replicating the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, Ireland secured a 36-14 victory, with Scotland unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that same group.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from holders and world number one South Africa until the showpiece match, presuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Tournament Ramifications

If the groups play out according to the current world rankings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from the likes of the English and Ireland all the way to the final.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts Australia find themselves alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will open the tournament in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to jump-start the event.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have drawn the Azzurri, Georgia and Romania. France are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will face Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the 20 who competed in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 stage for the first time in the competition's existence.

Although the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights initially, they will meet the second-placed team from Group B – probably Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the remaining six group winners will face a third-placed side from the pool stages.
