The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief the selector has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors around that, not just the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
