Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying these treatments must be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to starting mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically see a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a intense return of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural support.
